  • Episode 265: (Metal's) Future's So Bright... - Hatchet and Fall City Fall interview: 05/17/13
Dedicating ourselves to producing unique programming like RAM produces it's own unique rewards. It's awesome chatting with Metaldom's veteran outfits as they bring a vast wealth of knowledge and experience to share. Equally thrilling though is the opportunity to introduce some of the genre's Young Guns to our Beautiful M'Fers. San Francisco's HATCHET and Canada's FALL CITY FALL are future bright spots at opposite ends of the Metal spectrum. Hatchet are front runners for the new generation of Bay Area bashers. We sat down with the whole band and discussed their new disc and paid homage to the pioneers before them, all with a youth exuberance we found quite inspiring. Fall City Fall are a brilliant new band tearing up the metalcore/hardcore scene and Victory Records is squarely behind their new "Victus" album. Vocalist Nathan Zorn proved to be wise beyond his years discussing life in the underground and some responsibilities therein. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we chime in on the unbelievable Tim Lambesis situation and take Vince Neil to task. Metal's future so bright I gotta... Nah not gonna go there. Horns Up!!! • Episode 264: Picked Our Poison - Chris Potter interview: 05/11/13
At the end of the day, all a man truly has is his word. We recently found ourselves on the wrong end of an ill advised sports related friendly wager. As a result, we've taken the task of going through the good, the bad, and the pretty of 80s glam rockers POISON. As a true champion of hair metal, Poison were generally met with more jeers than cheers around here over the years. But regardless, the conversation definitely lit a fire under our collective ass. But all is not lost. RAM enjoys presenting unique ideas and guests. Veteran Canadian TV actor CHRIS POTTER recently gave us a moment of his time. Mr. Potter is known for more mainstream affairs like the TV shows "Heartland' and "Return To Kung Fu", but the man is a rock n' roller at heart. We discuss his involvement with the up coming GODDO rockumentary, gave us his take on the hey-day of Canadian hard rock, and we show off the War On Music record shop to him. All this and, of course, we mourn with the rest of Metaldom the passing of one of the all time greats. Horns up Forever, JEFF HANNEMAN!! • Episode 263: The Ground Up - Soilwork interview: 05/4/13
The path to success for Swedish death/thrash legends SOILWORK is a life lesson for everyone in all walks of life. Starting with their familiar but unique monicker (meaning "working from the ground up"), the band has earned everything the old fashioned way: through hard work and metric buttload of talent. Currently touring their ninth album, iconic bassist Ola Flink has been right there for them all. We recently caught up with Mr. Flink who gave us the 411 on all the current whys and wherefores in the Soilwork camp, particularily the incredible undertaking that is the new double LP "The Living Infinite". Whew! Who says less is more! In our News, Views, and Tunes, we share in Metaldom's recent victories at awards ceremonies and the cash register. We introduce Floridian blackenedDbeatcrustpunkmetallers HOT GRAVES in our Indie Spotlight. Horns up!! • Episode 262: Goddosmacked - Goddo interview: 04/27/13
Regular listeners of RAM have ben recently regaled with stories of rock n' roll documentaries and debauchery. It all culminates with this episode. GODDO are hard rock legends that ruled the Canadian AOR roost in the late 70s and early 80s. Fronted by mastermind Greg Godovitz, the band is still rockin' out in their sixties and are the most active they've been in over a decade. They recently came through town shooting their upcoming documentary and RAM got in on the act. During our sit down with Mr. Godovitz, we formed a symbiotic relationship while they ran the video cameras. What followed was a rock n' roll lesson we'll never forget. Musically, we crank some latter day Goddo and introduce Godovitz' new solo material to a whole new audience of music maniacs. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we discuss what's been spinning in our stereos and what's been keeping us out at all hours of the night. Finally, we give up some of English death metallers FLAYED DISCIPLE in our Indie Spotlight. Crank it up and get Goddosmacked! Horns Up! • Episode 261: Blackened - Marduk interview: 04/19/13
RAM is continuing our promise to the Metal world. You keep bringing us these legendary underground artists to us and we'll keep bringing them to you in our own fashion. Swedish black metallers MARDUK have been at the top of the second wave of Black Metal food chain for over two decades. Touring the Hell out of their latest masterpiece "Serpent Sermon", they recently returned through town and we caught up with vocalist Morgan Steinmeyer Hakansson. We discussed the new record, their recent hometown gold status, and the awesome DEATH WOLF side project. Having to crane our necks to look eye to eye with the man, we see just how larger than life he is. Looking to impress Mr. Hakansson with some homegrown talent, we feature atmospheric black metallers WILT in another extended Indie Spotlight right before they commenced their first national tour. • Episode 260: Beast of a Band - Warbeast interview: 04/14/13
D.I.Y. indie internet radio is balanced with pros and cons. The most prominent pro is the creative freedom it affords. We have nothing or nobody to be accountable to other than our own personal tastes and ideals. So when a particular band that we really dig comes down the Metal pipe, we can go crazy about them. Housecore Records upstarts WARBEAST is one beast of a band and their latest record "Destroy" is an early candidate for Album Of the Year. Beastly vox Bruce Corbitt was more than happy to give us a few minutes to discuss the new album, the upcoming tour with GWAR, and some great memories of his friend Mike Scaccia. We introduce Canuck death metallers ABRIOSIS in our Indie Spotlight and RAM gets the rock star treatment. Horns Up!!! • Episode 259: Slaves to The Sounds - Enslaved interview: 04/5/13
Pioneering Norwegian black/prog outfit ENSLAVED need very little of an introduction or a fancy-schmancy write up. When a man like bassist/vocalist Grutle Kjellson talks, Metaldom learns. So when we recently caught up with Mr. Kjellson, we were eager for an education from the man. We discussed their latest opus "Riitiir", the recent popularization of Thor, and just who is an Enslaved fan in 2013. In our "News, Views, and Tunes", we discuss bands crashing at our places and RAM going Hollywood. We also sit down with Minnesota doomsters VULGAARI in an extended Indie Spotlight. • Episode 258: Royal VViseguys - Royal Thunder and Ancient Wisdom interview: 04/2/13
Every great band has a humble beginning. The first phase to rock n' roll superstardom is the unsigned/indie phase. The next step is seemingly small but overwhelmingly important: Said band gets signed and records their first album to an eager but meager hard music underground. Now the real work begins. Through relentless touring and promotion (with little payoff), hopefully the band will create a buzz about them. Two bands atop the "buzz band" bin are Relapse's ROYAL THUNDER and Prosthetic's ANCIENT VVISDOM. Each band brings their own unique morsel to the musical dinner table and share the feast with us. Royal Thunder axeman Josh Weaver gives us the 411 including their amazing "CVI" record. We harrass Ancient VVisdom vox Nathan Opposition and acoustic ripper Ribs about their unique sound and even uniquer (!) monicker. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we disscuss the upcoming cool summer tours and introduce Ireland's CHOSEN in our Indie Spotlight. The best buzz you get is from great music. Horns Up!! • Episode 257: The Mob Rulz - Adrenaline Mob interview: 03/22/13
In Heavy Metal terminology, the supergroup is the joining of artists from different established bands to write and record as it's own entity. The concept has proven to be both revered and reviled. Fans of the original outfits no doubt welcome the new music while others may be more apprehensive and question the band's dedication to the long haul. Ultimately, it's the tunes that count and that's where supergroup ADRENALINE MOB delivers. Comprised of currents and exes of SYMPHONY-X, DREAM THEATER, and DISTURBED, A-Mob are already off and running. Pushing their new covers album, we recently caught up with axeman Mike Orlando and discussed the origins of the band, their collaboration with Lizzy Hale, and our mutual admiration for Jake E. Lee. In our News, Views, and Tunes we relive our Soccer Mom days, discuss past lives, introduce Baltimore bashers CARTHAGE in our Indie Spotlight, and say Horn Up!! to the immortal Clive Burr. In this special episode of the Cast Iron Ring podcast, we talk to rock journalist Mitch Lafon about a very special project. He is spearheading a special tribute CD that celebrates the 40th Anniversary of KISS. What makes this a very special and different project is that the proceeds will go to charity and it is being funded through PledgeMusic. The song selection will span the entirety of the KISS catalog. He’s got an awesome lineup of artists that includes members of GUNS N’ ROSES, DOKKEN, ACCEPT, SLAUGHTER, LA GUNS, WHITESNAKE, GREAT WHITE and more. New artists and tracks are added regularly! • Episode 256: Bearers Of Good Music - Pallbearer interview: 03/15/13
Maybe it's a reflection on society today, the current state of the hard music scene, or maybe it's just us. Doom Metal seems to be enjoying a peak right now. One of the big Doom guns is Arkansas' PALLBEARER. The band is developing quite a cult following and their Profound Lore album "Sorrow and Extinction" is flying off the record shelves. Currently touring on an awesome bill featuring the legendary Enslaved headlining, they were more than happy to spread a little good will and cheer our way. In our Indie Spotlight, we introduce Canadian metallers (and game show contestants) OUTLAW RENEGADES. We also get reacquainted with an old friend and say goodbye to a Canadian icon. • Episode 255: The C Word - Unearth and Despise You interview: 03/8/13
For a lot of old school Metalheads and those firmly entrenched in the lower bowels of Metaldom, anything with the "core" suffix is a dirty word. The modern metalcore sound seems to fall in line with the glams, grunges, and nu-metals of yesteryear and seems destined to suffer the same fate. But things aren't all bad. Like heavy metal itself, the "core" tree has sprouted many different branches producing some pretty tasty fruit. Mainstream metalcore marvels UNEARTH are scene originators, with axe slinger Buzz McGrath easily one of the most reconizable figures in Metal. We're totally stoked that we finally caught up with the Dude at their recent stop in town. On the opposite side of the "core" spectrum is powerviolence outfit DESPISE YOU. Vocalist Chris and Guitarist Phil gave us a personal education on the "powerviolence" term and their place in it. Musically, we spin our interview subjects, AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED, the awesome new DEVOURMENT album, and we feature Australian thrashers DECIMATUS in our Indie Spotlight. Only numerically is "core" a four letter word. Horns up!! • Episode 254: Obey Your Radio - Obey The Brave interview: 03/1/13
For dedicated Metalheads, our beloved genre isn't just a passing fancy or background noise. It's a passion, an ideal, and it can be parasitic in the way that it can crawl under your skin and embed itself there for the remainder of the host's days. It's also ironic that prison bars are literally made out of Heavy Metal. Once you're truly locked in, there ain't no getting out. When Canadian deathcore metallers DESPISED ICON decided to throw in the towel, vocalist Alex Erian thought he was done as well. The lure proved too strong. Now with a new band and tweak in sound, Metal has a new conquering hero. OBEY THE BRAVE is on a tear. Their debut record is awesome and they've taken their act on the road. On their recent stop through town, Mr. Erian gave us the 411 on the band: who (and why) they are, where they came from, and where they're going. For our usual travels, we make our first stop in Slovenia for a cool slice of NWOBHM with VIGILANCE in our Indie Spotlight. Horns up and Welcome Back, Dude!!! • Episode 253: From Eternity To Here - Into Eternity interview: 02/22/13
INTO ETERNITY are one of Canada's finest. Despite not having a new album in a helluva long time, they've managed to keep themselves in the hearts and minds of the citizens throughout Metaldom. The so-called "vocalist situation" pertaining to fan favorite vocalist Stu Block is still a hot button topic. Most of the band ganged up on their last stop in town. They gave us the lowdown on everything in the IE camp including touring vocalist Amanda Kiernan. Ms. K. is an immense talent who consistently proves her worth on stage and through her professionalism in this tough situation. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we crank some new IE and we introduce British bashers BURY THE HATCHET in our Indie Spotlight. Plus, the Mouse seems to be up to some old tricks and one of our own strikes a blow against nazism. Horns Up!! • Episode 252: Our Bloody Valentine - Devin Townsend interview Part 2: 02/15/13
For our Beautiful MFers, Valentine's Day probably doesn't mean much. It's a special day for the ladies (for the guys it's just guaranteed "action") but 'round here, we openly embrace it... after we put our own twisted little spin on it. First, we bring more love from Canadian metal mastermind DEVIN TOWNSEND. It's part deux of our chat which continued to have our hearts a flutter. We whip up a toxic batch of musical sweets and flowers courtesy of BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, ABNORMALITY, PUDDLE OF MUDD and the ever appropriate EDGE OF ATTACK in our Indie Spotlight. • Episode 251: My Generation's Townsend - Devin Townsend interview Part 1: 02/9/13
Most of the time, the veteran Metal musicians are the easiest interview subjects. They possess the experience, know-how, and generally have thoughts they wish to express to the citizens of Metaldom. DEVIN TOWNSEND recently proved to be such a subject. A Metal mastermind of a myriad of projects, Mr. Townsend has kicked our collective asses over the years. The DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT recently stormed through town and he gave us way more than a moment of his time. So much in fact, we had to split our conversation in two parts. With Devin we basically just had to press "record" and let the man do the talking. It gave us the opportunity to pick our jaws off the floor with what he had to say. Looking to impress Mr. Townsend with their own brand of Metal is Texas' CARRY YOUR GHOST who we feature in our Indie Spotlight. Move over, Pete... there's a new Townsend in town. • Episode 250: Splitting Time - Untimely Demise and Putrescense interview: 02/2/13
Hardcore followers of underground aggressive music are all too familiar with the concept of the split album. Two different artists share time and expenses and ultimately each takes a side of said release. Saskatchewan thrashers UNTIMELY DEMISE are at the forefront of the Canadian metal scene. Winnipeg grinders PUTRESCENSE have gained a loyal cult following throughout Metaldom's underbelly. On top of all this, both acts have members that are personal friends with RAM. So imagine how stoked we were when it was announced that veteran skin beater Cory Thomas was the new dude behind Untimely Demise! Recently this new supergroup tore up our fair city and gave us the lowdown on the goings on of both groups, giving us the interview equivalent of a split release. Vancouver deathsters XUL feature in our Indie Spotlight proving their worth beyond their Ghostbusters big baddie monicker. The cool aspect of split releases is they supply twice the awesome... much like this episode. Double Horns Up!!! • Episode 249: The Winter Of Our Content - Wintersun interview: 01/25/13
January is smack dab in the middle of a long, cold winter. The temperature plummets well below zero turning at least one of our locales into an icy and frigid tundra. To heat things up, a hefty dose of Heavy Metal is in order especially when it comes from a super hot band like Finland's WINTERSUN. Their recent stop in town provided the opportunity to speak to two different members in seperate interviews: first guitar/vox Jari Maenpaa, then bassist Jukka Koskinen. Their spectacular new(ish) album is the first in eight years, so everyone made sure everything in the Wintersun camp was covered... and then some. Musically we crank the brilliant "Time I" album and introduce Dover Pa.'s FROM THESE WOUNDS in our Indie Spotlight. Plus our usual News, Views, and Tunes (and the return of our M.I.A. comrad) has definitely helped make this the winter of our content. Horns Up!! • Episode 248: Chrigel And The Varg - Eluveitie and Varg interview: 01/18/13
Celtic/folk metallers ELUVEITIE are no strangers to this show. An amazing band, especially live, that boast an eight person line up that rocks out to a number of non traditional sounds and instruments including the violin, mandolin, harp, whistles, bagpipes, and the hurdy gurdy!??! We first caught up with Eluveitie in early 2012 as vocalist Chrigel Glazman stepped off the 70,000 Tons Of Metal cruise. The band's recent stop through town was a good time to catch up with Chrigel. This time, he brought along bandmate Anna Murphy to educate us on the aforementioned hurdy gurdy. German support act VARG impressed us enough where we had to feature them as well. Speaking with bassist Managram, still decked out in his battle-worn war paint, just seconds after stepping off the stage proved most interesting. All this plus our usual News, Views and Tunes discussing the 'Thrax camp, pinky swears, and our recent discovery of Bandcamp. Horns Up!! • Episode 247: It's A Gwarderful Life - Gwar interview: 01/10/13
We can't think of kicking off the new year in finer fashion than featuring none other than gore meisters GWAR! For three decades now, they have terrorized this toilet Earth, taking the inspiration from such pioneering shock rockers like KISS and ALICE COOPER and amping it up by a million. Right before throwing us pieces of human filth into the Slave Pit, vocalist Oderus Urungus gave us a few moments of his time. Mr. Urungus is full of opinions ranging from the political, preverted, cultural, and was more than happy to spew them in our direction. Of course no episode of this nature would be complete without a chat covering the Gwar gamut: from their punk roots, their one of a kind live experiece, and their recent charity work. • Episode 245: 2012 Rammy Awards: 01/8/13
Generally fans of aggressive music have little regard for the typical year end award ceremonies. We have a tendecy to view these so called "awards" as nothing but self congratulatory tripe used to further the corporate agenda. Radioactive Metal has no agenda but promote our beloved music and share our little pieces of it. With that, welcome to our 6th Annual Rammy Awards! These are kind of Radioactive Metal's piss take on the Grammy awards. Essentially this is the opportunity for the two biggest Metalheads in the game to share their faves in the categories that are most important to Metal itself. We share our picks for Fave Band, Album, Song, Live, News Story, Indie/New Band, and of course, induct those most deserving into the Radioactive Metal Hall Of Fame. As a special treat this year we managed to coerce some of our Cast Iron Ring breathen to help partake in the festivities making 2012 a most enjoyable year indeed. Horns Up!!! • Episode 246: From The Gallows - Gallows interview: 01/6/13
In more ways than one, it's appropiate that we should wrap up 2012 by featuring British hardcore frontrunner GALLOWS. The breakthrough success of the band was a major story this past year capturing the attention of the Metal world. It's no coincidence that this banner year should coincide with the arrival of new(ish) vocalist Wade McNeil. Canadian fans will remember Mr. McNeil from his tenure with ALEXISONFIRE, doubling the cool factor of speaking with him on the band's recent stop in town. He was eager to speak about all the goings on in the Gallows camp and particularily the rather - umm - unique artwork on their latest record. Montreal metallers CHARIOTS OF THE GODS have the honor of being 2012's final Indie Spotlight artists. We expect big things from them in the new year. 2012 is swinging from the gallows. Horns Up! • Episode 244: A Little Napalm Between Friends - Barney Greenway of Napalm Death interview: 12/24/12
Scratch another one off the old Bucket List. Our interest in British grindcore innovators NAPALM DEATH dates back to the band's very first album in our mid teens. For over a quarter of a century now, Napalm Death has been a frontrunner in the Extreme Metal sweepstakes and has influenced a whole generation. During their last trip thru town, we caught up with long time vocalist Barney Greenway and discussed their place within the underground, politics, and exchanged our mutual love of the Dead Kennedys. Musically, we crank some Napalm (giving nazi punks the big "F" off) and showcase electro metallers HONOUR CREST in our Indie Spotlight. • Episode 243: Getting Wasted - Municipal Waste interview: 12/16/12
Maybe around the RAM offices we're just a little out of touch with the hip new lingo. Years ago, the "Metalcore" sound was vastly different than what it is considered to be today. The original sound in the mid 80s was the melding of HM with hardcore/punk. It created a sub genre all it's own whose sound is still having an impact on artists today. Waving the old school Metalcore flag is Virginia thrashers MUNICIPAL WASTE. We recently hung out with vocalist Tony Foresta and later joined by bassist LandPhil discussing the Wasted camp, Phil's side project CANNABIS CORPSE, and shared a little love for their late friend Cory Smoot. Musically, we dine the Waste's (as Odererus Urungus affectionately refers to them as) latest platter "The Fatal Feast" and introduce British bashers BLOODLOSS in our Indie Spotlight. Plus all our News, Views, and Tunes with a report from the Geoff Tate solo tour and the latest chapter in the Randy Blythe fiasco. Let's get Wasted!!! Horns up!!! • Episode 242: Creepy Christmas - The Creepshow interviews: 12/10/12
The Christmas Season may be in full swing but RAM has the tendency to retain the spirit of Halloween all year 'round. It's in this spirit that we recently sat down with Canadian psychobilly ghoulies, THE CREEPSHOW. It's an interesting conversation that we're proud to say the Creepers later confessed to be the best interview they ever had. We discussed their love of Extreme Metal, their connection to Rue Morgue magazine, and a curse placed on the band to which RAM used it's Wiccan witchcraft to exorcize. Ha! Even the "dark side' can't mess with us! Given the spirit of this episode, it's only appropriate that we feature a band monickered like British extreme metallers AGHAST! in our Indie Spotlight. All this plus our usual News, Views, and Tunes including saying goodbye to the man that discovered Hendrix. Horns up up for that, Dude! • Episode 241: Alfred Headbanger Presents... The Birds - Gypsyhawk, Eagle Claw interviews: 12/3/12
The mighty Metal Blade are securing their future by looking into the past. Recent signing Gypsyhawk are a cool "retro" rock band with love for the 70s. That suites the classic rocker in us just fine. When the band recently flew through town, axeman Andrew Packer was cool enough to shriek and caw with us promoting their new record "Revelry And Resilience". Flocking with them on the road is Texas instru-metalheads Eagle Claw! They really impressed us so we decided to feature them in one of our extended Indie Spotlights. I guess you could say this episode was "for the birds". All this plus our usual News, Views and Tunes, including getting drenched by Gwar and more of our musical buddies getting signed to big labels. • Episode 240: Double Feature Audio Show - Revocation, Threat Signal interviews: 11/23/12
We recently had the good fortune of having both Relapse's REVOCATION and Nuclear Blast's THREAT SIGNAL tear through town just days apart. These awesome rockers would make a great one- two-punch on the live front, so we've taken it upon ourselves to team them up on our own personal RAM stage. Revocation guitarists Dave Davidson and Dan Gargiulo discussed their tech thrash sound and took the opportunity to push their brilliant new EP. Threat Signal turned our talk into a party atmosphere when they all chimed in to discuss the Hamilton Music Awards, their recorded output, and heaped some praise unto their Nuclear Blast home. As an homage to the Rocky Horror Picture Show, consider this our "Late Night Double Feature Audio Show". Musically we crank tunes from our esteemed guests, A LIFE ONCE LOST, and introduce UK trad metallers MONUMENT in our "Indie Spotlight". Old schoolers, meet your new fave band. Horns up!!! • Episode 239: H. E. Double Drumsticks - Septicflesh interview: 11/18/12
Drummers are the unsung heroes of Heavy Metal. Traditionally, the vox and the axe are the positions that get all the attention (plus all the other... uh...perks that come with being in a rock band). Without an awesome drumkit and masterful skinsman at the helm, Metal has no backbone. RAM loves to back the underdog, so we've had the good fortune of speaking to a large number of our genre's finest (and our fave) pounders. We caught up with SEPTICFLESH drummer Fotis Bernardo on their recent stop to discuss the 'Septic camp, the Greek scene, and soundtrack (!!) metal. Musically we give a dose of "The Great Mass", GENERAL SURGERY, ANCIIENTS, and we speak with Montreal metallers ENDAST in another special edition of our Indie Spotlight. Any unsigned band with their accomplishments and work ethic deserves more than a few moments of our time. Be sure to give 'em some of yours. Horns Up!! It's a fun chat where we talk about our first Kiss concert, collections, and our thoughts about the current state of the band. And, of course, we talk about Monster! • Episode 238: Hardcore History - Agnostic Front interview: 11/8/12
The RAM offices are all abuzz. NY hardcore legends AGNOSTIC FRONT's recent stop in town triggered a series of events that have made this humble program part of rock n' roll history. First off, AF guitarist and all around cool guy Vinny Stigma was gracious enough to give us a moment of his time. Mr. Stigma is quite the character, putting both a smile on our face while simultaneously giving us some serious thoughts as we discussed thirty years of hardcore goodness. AF have strong Cuban roots, so they've become strong supporters of Cuba's only hard music exports ARRABIO. By touring outside of their native land, Arrabio have made music history and RAM had the extreme honor of covering this historic event in our Indie Spotlight. Horns Up, Comrades (in Heavy)!!! • Episode 237: Beelzebub Bop - Inquisition interview: 11/3/12
Legend has it that on October 31st, All Hallow's Eve is the only day of the year that evil is granted a day pass from the netherworld and is free to roam the Earth. In the RAM offices during this time of year, we like to unleash our own brand of evil in the form of our annual Black Metal special. It was a happy accident that INQUISITION came through town just in time for Halloween. Vox and axeman Dagon was gracious enough to give us some time and discuss Inquisition's past and present (and Black Metal in general). A really cool dude who turns into a maniacal beast once he hits the stage. Musically, we crank some IMMORTAL, WATAIN, MAYHEM, CRADLE OF FILTH, and a classic from MERCYFUL FATE. We also feature two of Old Scratch's fave new bands in North Dakota's FROSTHELM and Winnipeg's HOARFROST in our Indie Spotlight. • Episode 236: Cloud Nine - Death Angel interview: 10/28/12
Bay Area veterans DEATH ANGEL started to make an impact on the international Metal scene at an extremely young age. Make no mistake though; they've earned their spot in the same breath as their legendary thrash contemporaries. After a live drought of biblical proportions, Death Angel have been invading our hometowns like a plague of locusts over the last couple years. We took the opportunity to clip the wings of axeman Ted Aguilar as he gives us some good words on all that's Heavy Metal holy. Another slice of Rock n' Roll Heaven is England's GODSIZED in our Indie Spotlight. They're about to break out big time. All this plus our usual News, Views, and Tunes. Horns (and Halos) Up!!! • Episode 235: Horns Up, Doc! - Sam Dunn interview: 10/18/12
The fine art of the documentary serves a two fold purpose: The first is to educate. The second, to a lesser degree, is to entertain. The ones that focus on our beloved genre have the unique ability of doing both in equal proportions. Kick started by the "This Is Spinal Tap" mockumentary, Heavy Metal has excelled at capturing itself in this medium. One of the industry leaders is Banger Films headed up by Canuck filmmakers Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen. Mr. Dunn is a HM household name, having educated and entertained the world over with his feature films and the "Metal Evolution" TV series. Unjustifiably Extreme Metal was pushed to the way side while making the series. So now Sam is gathering the troops to infiltrate some death/grind into the TV series. We recently had a chat with him to help sound the charge and gave our own thoughts on the good, the bad, and the ugly of Heavy Metal documentaries. Also totally deserving of their own documentary are Canadian deaththrashers Mortor, who we feature in our Indie Spotlight. Get on it, Mr. Dunn. Horns up, Doc!! • Episode 234: Slowly We... Rock! - Obituary interview: 10/11/12
Florida death metal veterans OBITUARY are legends. Front runners of what could be considered the second wave of extreme music, the band grabbed the proverbial death metal ball handed to them and ran like hell with it. With an extensive back catalog, for which every entry could find a spot within a "Top 100 Death/Black Metal" list, the Obits need little introduction. When the band's headlining "Carnival Of Death" tour stormed through town, we were more than eager to share some face time with drummer Donald Tardy, a surname synonymous with Death Metal itself. Mr. Tardy gave us his 2 cents (that's actually worth mucho $$) on a variety of topics including record labels, various side projects, the prospect of a Death Metal Big 4, and the realization that Obies tour bus is cleaner than Marduk's. Our Indie Spotlight artist is Canadian folk metallers SCYTHIA. Fresh off their biggest gig in their relatively short career at the Noctis festival, they shared the 411 on the band and were very gracious about our constant mispronunciation of their monicker. • Episode 233: Fists Held High - Skull Fist interview: 10/4/12
Sometimes all it takes is a real cool band to take a "Meh" Saturday night and shake it up into something special. Canuck metallers SKULL FIST recently blew thru town to rock our joint. Jackie Slaughter and Casey Slade calmed down long enough from the debauchery on the road to give us the what's-what in Metal and show everyone that they aren't afraid of being rock stars. They're definitely taking Metal's history into the future. In our Indie Spotlight, we're thrilled to introduce Texas deathsters PERVERSUM. • Episode 232: Metal's Origin... Kinda, Sorta - Origin interview: 09/27/12
Between recent episodes with multiple interviews and our tribute to the Ladies of Metal, our segments seemed to have ended up all over the place. This episode we're back on track and not a second to soon. We're thrilled to present our recent conversation with tech deathsters ORIGIN as they came through town, slaying all in sight supporting the mighty Kataklysm. Talking with vocalist Jason Keyser and drummer John Longstreth was both informative and entertaining, exposing a side of the band you probably assumed didn't exist. In an attempt to impress the Origin lads with our own Metallic homebrew, we crank out one of Winnipeg's finest in ALPHAKILL in our Indie Spotlight. All this plus our usual News, Views, and Tunes. • Episode 231: The Butcher Babies / Snowy's Angels 2012: 09/20/12
For many years, the role of the fairer sex in Metal has been mostly that of eye-candy. Throughout the years, more and more women in aggressive music ("Snowy's Angels" as Snowy affectionately refers to them) have started taking more prominent roles. Whether it's fronting a cool new band or keeping the Metal Machine running smoothly behind the scenes, women are more prominent in our beloved music. Every year, we show our appreciation with our annual "Women In Rock" episode. After slaying the European continent earlier this year, the BUTCHER BABIES (featuring "Snowy's Angels" Heidi Shepherd and Carla Harvey) have hooked up with OTEP for a North American jaunt. We were fortunate to catch up with The Babies again, making this a good time to break out our annual extravaganza. Musically, we crank some ARCH ENEMY, Otep, Butcher Babies, NUCLEAR DEATH, HAEMORRHAGE, HALESTORM, JUCIFER, DIEMONDS, and ONE-EYED DOLL. We also spend some time inducting this year's crop of Snowy's Angels Hall Of Fame winners whose roster shows the musical variety Women In Rock are proving to be capable of. • Episode 230: Home Sweet Home - Harlequin, Propagandhi interviews: 09/13/12
Our own backyard is big but it ain't that big. It's hard to believe that prominent members of a local heavy music scene can practically go their whole existence without really ever crossing paths. Winnipeg veterans HARLEQUIN were a multi-platinum household name ruling the Canadian AOR roost in the early 80s. Since then, the band has kept somewhat a lower profile but always remained a force on the local scene and mainstream radio. RAM finally got a hold of mainman/vocalist George Belanger and got caught up on over thirty years of Rock n' Roll history. Across town and across the musical spectrum, punk metallers PROPAGANDHI were kings of their genre. Over the past couple decades, they have proven to be one of Winnipeg's biggest exports on the international music scene. Just days before their Epitaph Records debut "Failed States" dropped, it was ultra cool of bassist Todd "The Rod" Kowalski to trek down to the War On Music record store and give some of his thoughts. To put a new spin on an old addage - "Home is where the Hard is". Horns up, Homies!! • Episode 229: Not A Pretty Sound - Death Sentence interview: 08/23/12
For the second week in a row, we can knock another off the old interview Bucket List. Canadian punkers DEATH SENTENCE are spoken in the same breath as some other legendary outfits as DOA, SNFU and THE DAYGLO ABORTIONS. They were major players in the soundtrack to our teen years. When drummer and only remaining original member Doug Donut announced a new line up and a cross-Canada adventure, we jumped at the chance to spend some time with them. We discussed the band's (and punk's) past, present, future and crank some of our fave DS tunes. In our Indie Spotlight, we introduce you to Spanish thrashers HABORYN. • Episode 228: How Sweet It Is - Michael Sweet (Stryper), Dark Century interviews: 08/23/12
This episode of Radioactive Metal represents the best of both worlds in numerous ways. Hard rockers STRYPER are a veteran outfit that some journalists like to throw words like "legendary" around to describe. They captured the attention of the Hair Metal world with their hard melodic rock and brought a positive message to an era submerged in debauchery. Not to mention, Stryper are an old fave around the RAM offices and we were fortunate enough to sit down with Micheal Sweet to discuss all things Stryper. It was a very interesting conversation that included his time in BOSTON, some very bizarre protesting, and literally rockin' in the ocean. Polar opposites are Canuck death thrashers DARK CENTURY in our extended Indie Spotlight. DC are an up-and-coming outfit that recently captured the attention of the metal world with a victory at the Heavy MTL Battle of The Bands. The win earned them a coveted spot on that festival stage. So we caught up with them a few days before Heavy MTL 2012 to introduce them to all our Beautiful MFers. And their message... well, not so positive. Double Horn Ups for both awesome bands! • Episode 227: Witching Hour and A Half - Skeletonwitch interview: 08/2/12
Sometimes everything just doesn't gel like one would want. For starters, were were only running on 66.6% capacity and this week's episode was riddled with techno glitches and snafus. But we persevered, especially since we had the good fortune of catching up with death thrashers SKELETONWITCH. Veteran 'Witch fans will be familiar with guitarist and spokesman Scott Hedrick. The man really is as he seems: he's a bright, enthusiastic character with a constant smile on his face and a joke at the ready... even when sharing his thoughts on his friend, the late Cory Smoot. • Episode 226: That Metal Game Show - My Own Chaos interview: 07/26/12
The world loves an underdog. The script writers from the Rocky movies or the booking committee of the WWE couldn't have written a better scenario. Our own Lizzy wanted to test her Metal and assert herself in the Boy's Club of HM internet radio and what better way than with a HM trivia challenge. So she called out the biggest dog in the yard - namely co-host Snowy White. With RAMmer #3 Roch acting as host, and armed with an invisible grapefruit of trivia questions, "That Metal Game Show" was on. The results? Well you're just gonna have to press play. But it's not all fun and games around here. We had a brief but enjoyable chat with Snowy's Angel Connie Chaos when her outfit MY OWN CHAOS strolled through town. And for this week's installment of the Indie Spotlight we tap Sweden's THE HORSEHEAD UNION. Two bands that no doubt one day will warrant their own entire chapters in the Big Book Of Heavy Metal Trivia. Horns Up!!! • Episode 225: 15 minutes of Awesome - 3 Inches of Blood interview: 07/19/12
Canuck metallers 3 INCHES OF BLOOD are no strangers to Radioactive Metal. Last year we had the good fortune of chatting with vocalist Cam Pipes. This time around, we had a chance for a face-to-face with (relatively) new bassist and manager extrodinaire, Byron Stroud. We specifically wanted to speak to Mr. Stroud because, while by no means are any members of 3IOB rookies or newbs, he has an impressive resume (FEAR FACTORY, DEVIN TOWNSEND) that he was more than happy to share his thoughts about. For our News, Views, and Tunes, we discover our personal Metal name with the Heavy Metal Band Name Generator game and Norway's excellent HELLISH OUTCAST are featured in our Indie Spotlight (and could quite well have used said game to pick their monicker). • Episode 224: Here Today, Still Here Tomorrow - Day Glo Abortions interview: 07/12/12
Remember those younger, more care free teen years rockin' out in your fave band swag to your fave records? You may think "Man, life just ain't gonna get any better". Maybe... but maybe not. One of those said fave records were courtesy of legendary Canuck punkers DAY GLO ABORTIONS. On their most recent stopover in town we were fortunate enough to catch up with the band at their hotel and we had a rather lengthy chat covering the last thirty years of Punk Rockdom. Later that evening, The Day Glos rocked the joint and RAM was there rockin out in our fave swag to one of our fave bands live. We would've loved to have sent a magical, mystical email to our teen selves saying "Oh yeah... it's gonna get better". We introduce Bay Area bashers MUDFACE in our Indie Spotlight. Horns Up!! • Episode 223: Withering Blythe - Withered interview: 07/5/12
Heavy Metal is a genre of music designed to both entertain and enlighten. Atlanta extreme Metal veterans WITHERED excel on both accounts. We recently had a chat with mainman Mike Thompson and drummer Beau Brandon that had us both laughing and our heads spinning. Our chalices were also full of our News, Views, and Tunes as we have a first hand report of the final night of the DEATH TO ALL celebration of Chuck Schuldiner's music. We also spent the Canada Day weekend rocking out to none other than the legendary Canuck punks (Canpunks??) The DAY GLO ABORTIONS. • Episode 222: What a Great Year - 1349 interview: 06/28/12
For over a week it was bright and sunny out in Winnipeg. The birds were chirping and people's spirits were high. Summer was just starting to show it's beautiful face. Then the dark clouds came covering the land with dismal rains which quickly crushed the populace's spirits. It's not a coincidence that this was the time that MARDUK and company reached our neck of the woods. Norwegian black metallers 1349 served as main support and we had the good fortune of catching up with vocalist Ravn and axeman Archaon. An interesting discussion to say the least, as we went over the origins of their namesake and their connections to the likes of CELTIC FROST and SATYRICON. Two cool dudes that hardly lived up to the ignorant black metal stereotypes. We introduce British bashers COLLAPSE in our Indie Spotlight. 1349... what a great year! With a promo vid currently making the rounds and a debut album waiting to be recorded, Mr. Zetro was eager to speak with us. A conversation that concluded with mutual admiration. • Episode 220: Dude or Wuss: 06/14/12
Most Metalheads discover our beloved genre during their youth. Young, dumb and full of (censored), it can be Rock n Roll all night with the Horns held high 24/7. But as Metalheads get more experience under their bulletbelts, Metal cred can be put to the test. Sometimes life's responsibilities and commitments can really suck the Metal out of one's lifesblood. Sometimes a non-believing "She" comes along and whips the cred out of even the most dedicated Metal soldier. We discuss the situations and scenarios that can really "test your Metal". It's time to Man Up or Wuss Out! Are you a Dude or a Wuss? As well, we go into some of our usual News, Views, and Tunes including cranking some BLEEDING OATH (Terrorizer magazine's "Unsigned Band 201") in our Indie Spotlight. Horns Up!! • Episode 219: Multiple Slips Of The Tongue: 06/7/12
We're always humbled when Radioactive Metal is complimented as one of the finest Heavy Metal talk shows on the interwebs. We pride ourselves on bringing The Beautiful MFers some awesome guests and riveting conversations each week. Sometimes things don't go as planned and the mind takes a holiday. So instead of our usual format, we kinda turned this week into a free-for-all doing what three of the biggest Metalheads in the world do. We crank some tunes courtesy of HALFORD, EXODUS, UNLEASHED, CANDLEMASS, SKULLFIST, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD and introduce England's SEVEN DEADLY in our Indie Spotlight. Of course, we get around to discussing all the goings on in Metaldom and partying at the beach (which probably explains a lot about this episode).
